Colour on Black

27.05.2026 — IN MÜNTSCHEMIER, LORENZ BOEGLI DEMONSTRATES HOW PURE, SATURATED COLOUR CAN BE PRINTED DIRECTLY ONTO BLACK — WITHOUT WHITE, WITHOUT COMPROMISE.

Printing saturated colour on black paper has long been one of screen printing's most demanding challenges. Lorenz Boegli has developed a method that makes it possible without the use of opaque white — neither as an underprint nor as a pigment mixed into the ink. The result: pure, luminous tones that travel the full arc of Johannes Itten's colour wheel, printed directly onto black. In this film, Boegli demonstrates the system in his studio in Müntschemier, where black is not an absence but a foundation — and the colours it holds become the work's defining statement.
